All Hallows Eve and All Saints Day

Today at my church the pastor talked in his children's message about how Halloween used to be called All Hallows Eve. He talked about how on All Hallows Eve people use to go from house to house and pray for the family's departed souls and the family of the house would give the people small cakes; all of which is very similar to modern day Halloween minus the costumes of course. When I think about what the pastor said I started to think about how commercialized Halloween has become. Around this time every year the commercials and ads start appearing to advertise costumes and candy. It makes me wonder whatever happened to make such changes to such an old holiday.

For all I know it could have just been some form of modernization, but could it have also been commercialization? I really am not sure if commercialization is solely responsible, but I would not be surprised if it had a hand in the changes. Yet for all I know the industries that make a lot of Halloween products may have just sprung up when they realized that the more modern version of All Hallows Eve could bring in some good money. In the end I may all say this, but I am not fully sure on how All Hallows Eve became the modern day Halloween that we all know and love.
